Bar-retained dentures: A thin metal bar that follows the curve of the jaw is attached to usually two or five implants that have been placed in the jawbone. Clips or other types of attachments are fitted to the bar, the denture or both. The denture fits over the bar and is securely clipped into place by the attachments.
Ball-retained dentures (stud-attachment dentures): Each implant in the jawbone holds a metal attachment that fits into another attachment on the denture. In most cases, the attachments on the implants are ball-shaped (“male” attachments), and they fit into sockets (“female” attachments) on the denture. In some cases, the denture holds the male attachments and the implants hold the female ones.
Implants are commonly placed in the front part of the jawbone because this area typically has more bone than the back of the jaw, even if teeth have been missing for some time. However, this is not always the case, as bone loss can occur in the area where a tooth has been lost. Additionally, the front part of the jaw has fewer nerves and other anatomical structures that could interfere with implant placement, which makes it an ideal location for implants.
The duration of the implant process depends on several factors. On average, it takes at least five months for the lower jaw and seven months for the upper jaw. This timeframe includes surgeries and the placement of the denture. However, the process can take a year or longer, especially if bone grafting or other preparatory procedures are needed.
Usually, two surgeries are necessary. In the first one, the implants are placed in the jawbone under the gums. The second surgery exposes the tops of the implants. The rest of the procedure comes three to six months after.
